REFLECTIVE ESSAY ABOUT THE MAGUINDANAO PEARLS
INTRODUCTION
Maguindanao Pearls is an ancient Filipino story was written by Isidro L. Retizos. The story
somehow relevantly displayed the love of a person, which this story has also a love triangle
scenario with the three main characters namely Lakambini who has fallen in love with Walang
Gulat or also known as "Magiting", in which Magiting has fallen in love with Sinag- Tala the lead
character of the story.
BODY
The story made mention of a basket weaver. In a community where the livelihood of most
families is basket weaving. They wove baskets from native grasses and plants out of necessity
since 1911. Before these baskets became art, they were tools. The people have been keeping
the tradition alive through a lot of hard work and a love of process. The designs used in crafting
such as products have been handed down from generation to generation by the tribal elders.
They even had a festival and they named it as the “Basket weaving festival”. The Maguindanao
people are part of the wider Moro ethnic group, who constitute the sixth largest Filipino ethnic
group. Their name means “people of the plains”. True enough our indigenous people have a
very rich culture and tradition that is part of our heritage as Filipinos.
Basket weaving, before these baskets became art, they were tools. The people have been
keeping the tradition alive through a lot of hard work and a love of process.
-Basket weaving dates back a very long time. In fact, it pre-dates some forms of pottery and
woven cloth. Evidence for this has been discovered in the form of stone carvings from around
20,000 years BC. The materials used would have depended on people’s surroundings and
varied considerably, from willow to roots, brambles, vines, oak, ash, hazel, bamboo, leaves,
straw, rush and bark.
Lakambini, Lakambini knew that he was going to do something bad but as she screamed, -
Pirang Kawayan stabbed his own daughter. Lakambini then admitted that she was the one who
hid the pearls and that Sinag-tala was innocent. But it was too late for Sinag-tala was already
dying.
-Known as the "pure maiden" for his incomparable beauty, ironic that he is a male diwata. He
was originally known as the god of "kapurihan" (purity) and is also the god of food, festivity and
anti-gluttony. worshiped mainly by men: they pray to Lakambini
Pearls, she then told Sinag-tala that she did not need the basket anymore and ended up hiding
the pearls in one of the baskets.
-One of nature's greatest miracles Officially the world’s oldest gem, pearls have been revered
since long before written history.
